چکیده

In order to reduce the user latency, the web sites disseminate some of their information to surrogate caches located closer to the users. We discuss a simple differentiated service type architecture for content delivery networks. A pricing scheme is next proposed to complement this architecture and provide fair service to the subscribed publishers. Then, we show that the suggested pricing scheme is also the optimal (revenue maximizing) pricing scheme for a monopolistic surrogate. We investigate the performance of the pricing scheme in a duopoly and show that under certain conditions the competition results in peering of the surrogates. Finally, we suggest methods to determine the optimal number of service classes offered to the users. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optimal Pricing and Capacity Allocation in Vertically Differentiated Web Caching Services

Internet infrastructure is a key enabler of e-business. The infrastructure consists of backbone networks (such as UUNET and AT&T), access networks (such as AOL and Earthlink), content delivery networks (CDNs, such as Akamai) and other caching service providers. Together, all of the players make up the digital supply chain for information goods. Caches provisioned by CDNs and other entities are ...

Users' Benefit and Provider's Revenue of Content Delivery Services with Priority Control

Recently, a large amount of content is delivered to users by content delivery services through broad-band networks. The necessity for the service which guarantees quality is increasing in the Internet, because users' requirements are diversified. Differentiated services, which have multiple classes using priority control, are being introduced. The limited network resources can be used effective...

A Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks

Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...

A novel, practical pricing strategy for congestion control and differentiated services

Pricing is an effective tool to control congestion and achieve QoS provisioning for multiple differentiated levels of service. In this paper, we propose a practical, flexible and computationally simple pricing strategy that can achieve QoS provisioning in Differentiated Services networks with multiple priority classes at close to peak efficiency, while also maintaining stable transmission rates...

Pricing and Peering Strategies of Differentiated Services Content Networks

Web sites disseminate some of their information to surrogate caches in order to reduce the latency observed during the delivery of the information. The surrogates classify publishers under several classes with respect to their willingness-to-pay. Surrogate partitions the total cache capacity among different classes to provide a loose version of Quality of Service. In our model, publishers try t...
